Josh Hartnett
His appearance, his film roles, his look/view - everything of him seems so
naturally, he wears the most severe suits with easiness.
What does make this man so relaxed?
A self-information in 31 points
He is sitting at his favourite place in a silent corner behind the bar having
lunch with two friends. The two extensive tattooed men and Hartnett seem to be
very hungry. Eight emply plates are on the table. Since seven oīclock in the
morning the three of them have been on their boards surfing the waves at Long
Island. In the afternoon they are going to be back to the surf. But not too
long. The 31-year old is off to a movie shooting tomorrow to Southafrica.
I actually donīt care about fashion. Iīm always getting asked about styling
tips. Or which kind of trainers you should wear to jeans. Believe me: nothing
does interest me less than this. In the morning I go to my closet and put on
whatīs clean.
Okay, there are still a few rules: a jeans should not be too wide, itīs allowed
to hang a little bit down the butt, But we are actually not anymore at that kind
of age where we have to show our pants. Itīs ideal when the jeans is washed-out
and looking as if itīs used.
But a man should never, never, never wear a jeans with those creative washings.
Unless you are playing the dumbass in a movie.
Unicolored T-shirts are always okay, but I also like to go out in checked
shirts. For cold days I advice a checked shirt over a unicolored T-shirt.
For me the world is okay, when Iīm here in the "Five Leaves" having a sandwich
with bacon, avocado and tomatoe. Can you imagine a more sympathetic restaurant?
Especially here in Brooklyn there are a lot of aweful bars/taverns. Heath Ledger
was the owner of the "Five Leaves". Now all his old friends meet here. The whole
neighbourhood is thankful for this wonderful legacy/device.
Donīt ever ask me about my friend Heath Ledger. I can become really aggravating
then. Other than that you can ask me everything.
Today Iīm wearing runners from Nike, because we have been working out a couple
hours already. But mostly I wear vans. I have a few couples of them, which I
wear randomly.
A complete/whole outfit should not cost more than 200 Dollars.
Okay: with sunglasses maybe 500 Dollars.
Yes, the prices for sunglasses are really absurd. But I just need a Cutlers and
Gross, and they are not for free.
I like Pullovers with horizontal stripes.
Iīm a biker. I have an old second-hand one for the everyday life and a
mountainbike from Specialized to boast. Sundays at Bedford Avenue.
Do you know the movies of Yasujiró Ozu? "Tokyo Story" and "Floating Weeds" I can
advice to everyone. Melodramas about the daily life that really got me.
You can bet that it was fun shooting "Pearl Harbor". There is a big advantage
when doing a big Hollywood Production compared to the lower budget ones, that
Iīve done in the past: Menues and accommodations are always first class.
Please donīt ask me about my relationship/aquaintanceship with Scarlett
Johansson. Everything has been said about this topic. To a good style it belongs
that you never talk publicly about the women that you love/like or that you did
love/like. Other than that you can really ask me everything.
Now a quick commercial break: last year I produced the Thriller "August". A
really exciting, small movie about a couple young guys at Wall Street and how
their greed turned them into perdition. Unfortunately we sold the rights to an
incompetent company, so "August" was in theatres way too shortly - although the
movie describes the reason for the financial crisis kinda visionary. Well Iīm at
least proud of it.
So please: Go buy the DVD!
PART 2...
This morning on my way to the beach I was listening to the Beastie Boys.
.In my Toyota Prius.
In Saint Paul, Minnesota, where I grew up and where my dad is still living, I
own an actually big house. I like to be there, because we have a big garden
there and the forests are not far away. The furniture is modern but kind.
I donīt want any design classics in my house, they are too down and out of
clichés.
Buying furniture is one of the most difficult things. I noticed that again just
recently when I arranged my new apartment in Brooklyn. I was looking all over:
from Ikea to little antique stores. In Hong Kong I found a couple nice lamps.
I did a movie in Hong Kong with Anh Hung Tran from Vietnam, one of my favourite
directors: "I come with the Rain". It was only seen in Asia until now. At night
we went out with the team. They just won the jackpot in the national lottery all
together. I swear: when they win the lottery, the Chinese can celebrate like no
others.
Iīm really interested in Asia. Literature, Cinema, Art, Food - I canīt get
enough of that. Thatīs why I have worked over there most of the time in the past
years and spend a lot of time in Tokyo, Manila and Bangkok. I walk through the
streets alone, try unknown food or listen to strange noises, that you can hear
from everywhere. The biggest privilege in my job: I can travel a lot and get to
meet people who show me their city.
I donīt have a favourite city. San Francisco is a nice place. But New York is my
home, and after all my friends moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn, I also moved
there.
In Germany I know Berlin and Hamburg. There itīs also nice.
I recently re-discovered "Uhrwerk Orange" of Stanley Kubrick. When a movie still
looks that fresh after so many years, thatīs a big artistical work.
The crazy story of my new film: A girl is travelling from Japan to Minnesota, to
find the money that Steve Buscemi was carving in the snow in "Fargo". She gets
involved in lots of dangerous situations and finally dies. The story is true.
Since Iīm 20, I support politicians that I like in their elections. Just
recently of course Obama. We have to keep our fingers crossed for him.
Soon I have to be at the Premiere of "Bunraku", a thriller with Woody Harrelson,
where I play the main character. Iīll wear a tux, but actually donīt like the
feeling that much.
I prefer the self-tied bow tie than the pre-tied bow tie.
At a Premiere I can see from afar, if a woman/girl feels well in her dress. Most
of them get their dresses from a sponsor and are really unhappy with that. I
always get my own tuxes on my own costs and therefore I donīt owe anyone a
smile.
I donīt have a favourite designer even though some of my friends here in the
neighbourhood design clothes that I of course buy then.
A closing word to the style question: if you are standing in a room in an
upright posture, there is actually nothing than can get wrong.
